JOSEPH ESPALIOUX ATELIER

Joseph Espalioux (1921 - 1986)

It is amazing to realize how a self-taught, away from all artistic movements, has such a technique and such research.

Jose Espalioux was born in Corrèze, France and lived in the Ariege region.

His works are of one piece, reflecting the strength and the force on the use of the materials.

In his debut he use to paint with great touches in thickness, impressionist, by the end of his life to the forefront tachiste but always built.

It is through the horse that Espalioux finds his blossom: son of a blacksmith he learned and studied the horses.

The most of his painting will reflect the horse’s movement, speed, and the “future” showing the speed.

Self-taught Espalioux is the image of work, technical research: it is a truly great painter and sobering at the painting without current technology, without representation …

Espalioux has been featured in numerous exhibitions in France, Spain, Portugal and his works are in museums or as Albi and Castres.

The Ariège and the Corrrèze should consider fortunate to have in such a painter. The sale of his “Workshop” will be a second life for Mr. Espalioux and a given chance to the collectors.

Press Release

Oleum Primum Arborum

THE OLIVE TREE IS THE FIRST OF ALL TREES

Most great ideas have emerged by chance. However, it is not by chance that men come together. This is precisely what happened one day when Auctioneer Stanislas Machoir visited the domain of two extraordinary characters, both owners of olive trees in different countries with a school of life from another galaxy, both very close to nature, both amazing and original human beings but most of all visionaries. Why wouldn’t we accept the proposition of selling these magic trees by auction and sharing with others the fortune of living monumental sculptures? Why will one divide the richness of their patrimony? A common ground: the extraordinary love for ancient olive trees. The likelihood: to own some of them.

The ancient olive tree represents a different universe for each person: botanical, mythological, scientific, gastronomic, with parts engrained in the earth but at the same time being a representation of eternity… They are not trees, they are souls in movement: the soul of humanity!

The olive tree, mythical, sacred, symbol of peace, fascinates us due to its longevity. It illustrates more than any other species the perpetuity of living. Constantly battling the adversity, the olive conquers time. It is also the Tree of the Mediterranean civilization, where the oil nourishes its habitants, the olive is respected: it’s silver foliage and it’s tortuous trunk that continuously ages give it the aspect of a hoary man, it is exactly such as old Master receiving the greatest respect.

We were under the charm of those astonishing works of art. The olives prove their vivaciousness through their grayish green foliage, their trunks which sculpt numerous expressions, with an elegance that’s unheard of and it is with respect to their condition and great devotement of nature that we have accepted to do this Auction.

The 44 ancient Olive trees that we will be presenting on October 8th at Chateau de Lasserre are above all ancient pieces, never before gathered in a collection for an Auction (but sold separately, though the possibility of buying more than one may apply!).

The Roman allusion to which we refer for naming this auction is crucial because its origin speaks for itself: it is perhaps the supreme Mediterranean heritage offer to the world. Strongly linked to the lives of people in the Mediterranean basin, the olive would have appeared in its wild form more than 14,000 years ago. Fossil leaves dated 8000years BC have been retrieved in Roquevaire, France. With the period of great discoveries during the colonization, the olive crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and then cultivated in California, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, South Africa and Australia, Japan and also in China.

The olive belongs to the family of Oleaceae in which the genus “olea” includes 30 to 40 species divided between Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand and America. The Europaea species is the sole representative of Mediterranean species of the genus olea where 2 species reign supreme: I. the cultivated olive denominated Olea sativa or Olea Europaea (var); II. The wild olive tree denominated Olea Oleaster, Olea Europaea var. Olea Silvestris.

The ancient olives possess an extreme beauty such as the most beautiful sculptures that we have presented plenty of times for auction. These robust trees have the advantages of seduction and aesthetics, indubitably because each olive tree is unique. Not one olive tree is identical to another, like none of us is. Unique like the human ambition of excellence and originality.

From an ornamental point of view, it is impossible to deny the appreciation that an olive produces in no matter which context, a garden, an architectural modern ensemble, in the cities. The olive tree is a tree that possesses great obedience, enormous richness, whose fruit is a sign of fecundity, longevity, purification, peace and prosperity. Without doubt, the vegetable presence highlights every atmosphere and adds value to any property or any urban space, the presence of such specimen becomes naturally the soul and master of the place. We could go even further and assert that their presence in our life translates in an increase of positive feelings and a reduction of fear, and sad feelings; clinically speaking, this translates in a lower blood pressure, lower cardiac activity, muscle crispation and the electric cerebral activity. In short: The effect of olive trees is good for the soul.

The symbolism of an olive tree surpasses scientific reasoning. The Gods, the kings, the empires and civilizations, have lived their glory and have long disappeared but the eternal and ancient olive still remains untouched in all its forms, material and metaphysical.

The olive has been at all times a source of inspiration for humanity: It’s a source of life. And, it is also a symbol of peace, of strength and eternity; it’s generous and robust, with a historical, social, cultural, economical, political, poetical, architectural, and artistic dimension. We insist on the emblematic nature of the olive although it has always been appreciated for its generosities and numerous virtues. Without discarding the ornamental character of each of the specimens that we present, our sale surpasses the rubric of an auction of rare and exotic plants, even though that rubric is legitimate and quite fashionable. Our goal is to allow the sale of a magnificent millenary work of art. The olives that we present belong to four varieties Cordobil , Galega, Gallega and Farga, coming from in the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) with trunks whose circumferences oscillate between 4 and 9m30, and weighing 3 to 12 tons. They have been supervised by specialists and controlled in phytosanitary terms with an absolute rigor during more than a year in the same place where they are currently located. Each olive has a technical sheet of specifications, meticulously formulated depicting the genealogy of each tree. Also, a society from Toulouse specialized in transportation of olives will be on the premises the day of the auction in order to guide you and offer you special rates.

This auction is a world premiere and it’s our pleasure and honor to present these olives for sale by auction, unique and truly living sculptures. Modern designers could humanize their creation by building a house or building around an olive that will link the modern world to the past and the future.

The olive as sculpture is undeniable and indisputable because it brings together both lovers of classical sculptures as well as modern contemporary artists.

No absolute definition can be made against olive trees on the contrary, it will elevate the owner of an olive into a humanist, an ecologist and forerunner in current trend.

The olive will ennoble its owner.
