CHIKLI carpet (Caucasus, Artsakh of northern... - Lot 48 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
CHIKLI carpet (Caucasus, Artsakh of northern Armenia), late 19th century Dimensions: 265 x 123cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on wool foundation. A magnificent hexagonal medallion, arrowed, highlighted with "canes" in warm colors and a blue gradient background, adorned with multicolored stylized birds sits at the center of an abraché tobacco-colored field. The field is strewn with flowers, Medes stars, insects and stylized animals. But what really sets it apart are the six mandorla medallions, brick, arrowed and indented, with tree-of-life motifs. Four geometrical brick spandrels with cruciform and floret tracery enhance the whole. Two counter-borders, brick and navy, with a series of small flowers and baguettes, frame the main ivory border with a garland of polychrome flowers, some with birds. Uncommon provenance.
