Tapestry of the Royal Manufacture of Aubusson,... - Lot 608 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Tapestry of the Royal Manufacture of Aubusson, from the middle of the XVIIth century Technical characteristics : Wool and silk Dimensions : Height : 275cm ; Width : 490cm This tapestry has for theme the life of Judith, heroine of the old testament. Indeed we see her, here, on a pedestal, nobly dressed, brandishing at arm's length the head of the Assyrian general Holofernes, that she has just taken out of the bag that her old maid is holding next to her. The Assyrian army having laid siege to the city of Bethulia, Judith, using her charm, was accepted in the military camp, next to the general, whom she beheaded while he was sleeping. This allegory takes place in the early morning, within the walls of the city, where the inhabitants of the tribe of Zebulun are amazed by the feat of their fellow citizen, while the Assyrian soldiers are completely horrified to see their commander in chief, having passed from life to death. It is a noble assistance which attends the macabre presentation, military with the shimmering armors, brandishing weapons and standards and civilians of high extractions dressed of draped togas, with the rich embroideries. Borders with exuberant garlands of flowers, acanthus leaves and fruit basket. (A certificate of authenticity of the expert, Mr. Frank KASSAPIAN, will be given to the buyer.
