Very important meteorite from Campo del Cielo... - Lot 3 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Very important meteorite from Campo del Cielo in Argentina. The Campo del Cielo is a group of meteorites found in Argentina, province of Chaco, covering an area of several tens of km ², the impact area is riddled with about twenty craters created by the fragmentation of a single meteorite 6000 years ago. Solid bodies from space enter the Earth's atmosphere daily. Most of them are volatilized but a small part falls on the ground. They give us information on the composition and history of solid matter in our solar system. The meteoric fragments found in the surrounding craters are mainly composed of iron, with 6.68% nickel and lower percentages of cobalt, phosphorus and other elements. The presence of iron-nickel alloys is the most notable difference between the mineralogical composition of meteorites and terrestrial rocks, which rarely contain them. Composition of those of Campo del Cielo: Fe :92,64%, Ni :6,68%, Co :0,43%, P :0,25%, Ga :87ppm, Ger :407ppm, Ir :3,6ppm L :9,6cm. In 2016, there are more than 54,000 meteorites classified (official name validated) by the Meteoritical Society, which publishes an annual catalog of newly analyzed meteorites, the Meteoritical Bulletin. This number increases by about 1,500 each year. This one is very important: weight: 18,8 Kg. Size: 16 cm X 23 cm X 25 cm (approximately) bearing traces of remaglytes
