Tapestry of Flanders in wool and silk, late... - Lot 4 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Tapestry of Flanders in wool and silk, late 16th, early 17th century This tapestry shows, without a doubt, a biblical scene, where we see a venerable sovereign with a flowery beard, in armour, toga and collar, wearing a royal tiara and having a sceptre in his hand, sitting on his magnificent throne, all draped in blue dyes, receiving a missive from another royal figure, of the same age, also holding a scepter and being dressed in a heavy and long "Brandenburg" coat, collar and headgear. A counsellor in a "Phrygian" cap accompanies the second while the first is guarded by a heavily armed soldier and is "assisted" by a dwarf, who plays the role of the madman. A balustrade thickens the throne room of the other rooms of the castle, where we see a copyist writing a book and another conversing with a messenger. An archaic border with floral compositions and female characters shimmering. (Small restorations of uses) Height: 230; Width: 260cm
