17th century wool and silk tapestry of Antwerp In... - Lot 23 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
17th century wool and silk tapestry of Antwerp In a setting of undergrowth, on the edge of the gardens and ponds of a majestic palace and under the gaze of a magnificent peacock, Jupiter, having taken on the appearance of Diana, is trying to seduce the nymph Callisto armed with an arch and her quiver. Both are richly draped in togas revealing one of their breasts. The iconography is confirmed by the eagle which is one of Jupiter's attributes along with "the" lightning. Cupid is skeptical about the success of the deception. The side borders are decorated with two richly flowered caryatids depicting Jupiter and Callisto or frolicking couples of turtle-doves. The lower border is dotted with delicate flowers, while the upper one is adorned with braids of flowers, fowls, cherubs and a cartouche, where it is inscribed "JUPITER TRANSFORMATUS" which translates as "The metamorphoses of Jupiter". Height: 297; Width: 303cm Some slight oxidation and small natural wear. Maintenance restorations
