Panel of fine tapestry of Brussels (Flanders), wool and silk, early 17th century. Roman war scene "The death of Remus", killed by his brother Romulus, which can be seen to the right of the flag. The R and the M, are part of the banner of Remus whose remains can be seen. Beautiful polychromy This tapestry depicts a large military escort mourning the death of their sovereign. In the foreground, we see armoured, helmeted, armed senior officers with shields at their feet, at the head of a column in arms, and in the background, horsemen, some of them turbaned in the oriental style, riding richly harnessed mounts. One of them raises the shroud of the deceased to present it to the audience. A mountainous landscape can be seen on the horizon. Braided border. Beautiful bright colours.
