AUBUSSON
Panel of fine Aubusson Tapestry in wool and silk. Late 17th - Early 18th century The marriage of Paris and Hélène Part of the series of 8 paintings on the history of Paris and Helene, probably from the workshops of Jacques de Clarasvaux, based on the cartoons of the painter, the King, Isaac Moillon (1614-1673). Remarkable finesse, beautiful freshness of colour. Maintenance restorations. Ht. 235cm - Width 360cm The sequence of the marriage of the Trojan Paris with the Greek Helen sows the seeds of the Trojan War. Here, the young couple is surrounded by Paris' parents, Priam and Hecuba, and introduced to foreign guests. The hanging would have consisted of seven or eight pieces, and this scene would follow that representing "The Judgment of Paris. If specialists suggest seeing in Isaac Moillon, the main painter working for the factories of the Marche, the author of the models of these tapestries to the theme largely ignored by the Parisian workshops. A panel, similar to the one we are proposing, is present in the collections of the Château de Gramont. It should be noted that a series of identical hangings is mentioned in the inventory of the crown in 1671. Several copies are in different museums: Nantes, Centre de Musées Nationaux (CMN), Nancy (Beaux-Arts), etc.., Bibliography: Histoire de Pâris et Hélène: Le mariage de Pâris et Hélène, Gramont, DPOM 992. Model of Isaac Moillon. Aubusson, late 17th c. © CMN, Paris.
