AUBUSSON
Aubusson tapestry, early 18th century. Eirene Daughter of Zeus and Themis, Goddess of Peace and of the spring season, the Goddess Eirene, carries a sword and burns a trophy of weapons (peace burns weapons), accompanied by a cassette carrier in a background of vegetation. In wool and silk A few maintenance restorations, fairly good general condition Border with garland compositions of flowers and foliage. Four spandrels with coiled foliage macaroons Ht. 275cm - Width 215cm Eirene is the goddess of peace and the spring season. Spring was the season most at risk for wars in ancient times. Her parents are Zeus and Themis. Eirene is a Horai just like her two sisters. Eunomia ("good regulation") and Diké ("justice"). Eirene or Irene is one of the many secondary deities corresponding to the personification of an abstract notion, like Ploutos which means "wealth" or like Tuhkè, "luck", "chance". Eirene is very close to the god of wealth, Ploutos. Although she appears little in Greek legends, she was truly honoured and very popular. Its name means "peace". His opposite is Polemos, a god of war. With her sisters, she guards the gates of Olympus and presides over the division of the seasons. They are often portrayed as beautiful young girls bearing fruit. Alone, she is shown holding a horn of plenty in her left hand and an olive branch or the staff of Hermes in her other hand. She is also depicted burning a pile of weapons or carrying ears of wheat in her hand or above her head.
