BRUXELLES
Exceptional, very important and fine Tapestry of Brussels (Flanders). 2nd part of the XVII° Judith and Holofernis To the cheers of a jubilant crowd, Judith, with the help of her old maid, displays the head of Holofernes, which she has just cut off. Under the moon, by the light of torches and torchlight, the bourgeoisie, soldiers, priests and common people celebrate the victory of Bethulia over the Assyrians. In wool and silk Braid signed I. Cordys (manure) and B.B. (Brussels-Brabant). Large borders with sprays and polychrome flower and foliage compositions inlaid with fruits and parrots. The richly adorned scene is framed by a magnificent border of garlands of fruit, vegetables and flowers, varied and colourful, enriched by two parrots. Acanthus leaves at the base, a frieze of eggs and multicoloured floral bouquets above the scene complete the ensemble. The richly moulded medallion is in the name of the two biblical heroes concerned. Very nice state of preservation. Beautiful polychromy. Remarkable freshness of colours. Ht. 340cm - Width 378cm Jean Cordijs (obtained his privilege in 1650) or his son Jacob (privilege in 1680), weavers from Brussels who had collaborated with Jacob Jordaens. History: Judith enters the tent of Holofernes, an Assyrian general about to lead an offensive against the city of Bethulia. He gets drunk to the point of losing consciousness; Judith beheads him, and carries his head in a basket (the head is often represented in a basket carried by one of Judith's maidservants, older than her. Here it is a bag). Coming from the hanging of the Illustrious Women, our tapestry belongs to a series of cartoons made by Jacob Joardens. This hanging consists of eight pieces, woven in the small workshops of Henri de Puttere and Jan Cordijs, evoking the heroines of the Bibe and Antiquity:
