AUDENARDE
Tapestry panel from Oudenaarde (Flanders). Late 16th century (circa 1600) The Capitulation of Laval Probably wood paneling (misappropriated) Wool and silk. Some maintenance restorations, good state of conservation. Ht. 220cm - Width 200cm Following the Battle of Ivry follows a battle of religious wars. It pits the royal army commanded by Henry IV against the League army, reinforced by Spanish contingents, commanded by Duke Charles de Mayenne. It takes place on the plain of St. André between the town of Nonancourt and the town of Ivry. In spite of their numerical superiority, the leaguers are routed. On April 27th 1594, in the absence of Urbain de Laval Boisdauphin, Guillaume Le Clerc de Crannes seized the castle of Laval. The Marshal d'Aumont and his generals handed over the keys of the city while prostrating themselves. This surrender comes after the battle of Port Ringeard (May 2, 1593), which is depicted in perspective in this beautiful panel.
