Sandstone statue of Durga represented standing... - Lot 20 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Sandstone statue of Durga represented standing in a slight wiggle with a naked torso and generous and high breasts, dressed in a long and thin sampot with its particular shape, the drapery and the three-fold buckle are very representative of the style of the time. The head is surmounted by a mitre nicely decorated with three rows of staggered arcatures. The peaceful face is oval, framed by ears with elongated lobes, convex superciliary arches, fine eyes, a straight nose, fleshy and hemmed lips. The rounded shoulders and the bust with soft curves give her a plasticity imbued with great serenity. Durga is the goddess of war, mother of the universe. Her fight against the demon Mahishasura allowed her to bring joy and peace to the inhabitants of the Earth. Cambodia, Funan Kingdom, Prei Kmeng style 6th-7th century AD 25x14x88cm European collection since the end of the 60s.
