Sandstone statue of Durga Mahisuramardini... - Lot 306 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Sandstone statue of Durga Mahisuramardini (the one who killed the buffalo demon), with four arms, represented standing with a slight wiggle on the head of the buffalo demon Asura as a sign of her victory. Her naked torso shows a generous, high, hemispherical chest highlighted by a fold in relief suggesting the suppleness of the skin. The wide and rounded hips mark a femininity all in softness and realism. Durga is the goddess of war, mother of the universe. Her fight against the demon Mahishasura allowed her to bring joy and peace to the inhabitants of the Earth. Cambodia, Pre-Angkor period, 7th to 8th century AD Certificate of authenticity of the Mouhot Gallery. 29x17x62cm
