Fossil fish: Gyrodus Hexagonus. Mesozoic Era, Upper Jurassic, Tithonian (about 150 million years ago) Sonhofen Limeston, Eichstätt, Germany Plate : 25cmX31cmX1,5cm Fish : 14cmX12,5cm. Excellent quality of conservation. Gyrodus is an extinct genus of pycnodontiforms known to have lived from the Upper Triassic to the Middle Cretaceous. They had a laterally compressed body, a round shape and rounded teeth specialized in crushing their prey. The Solnhofen limestone is a famous Upper Jurassic Lagerstätte in Germany. One of the most famous fossils of all time, Archaeopteryx, was found here. The fine-grained limestone is an excellent building material, which has led to intensive quarrying over the past two centuries, resulting in the discovery of spectacular fossils.
