Unrolled ammonite with spines presented... - Lot 83 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Unrolled ammonite with spines presented out of rock matrix. Gassendiceras alpinum. Upper Barremian (Cretaceous) 115 million years old. Provenance: region of Tamanar (Morocco) located between Essaouira and Agadir on the Atlantic coast. 45X45 cm. One hundred million years ago, a group broke with the classic ammonite winding pattern (a spiral with joined turns) to elaborate an infinite number of other types of shells. The whole of these specimens, described under the term of unrolled ammonites corresponds undoubtedly to the most characteristic fossils of Provence because one finds there 80% of the world species. If these ammonites are certainly among the rarest, their aerial port and their slender appearance also give them an extraordinary aesthetic component resulting in real natural sculptures. The spines of these ammonites must have played a direct role in their protection against the large marine predators of the time. SALE BY APPOINTMENT
