Block of two unrolled ammonites from Provence:... - Lot 82 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Block of two unrolled ammonites from Provence: Acrioceras puzosianum and Crioceras nolani. Hauterivian (Cretaceous) 120 million years old, Veynes region (05), South-East of France. H : 20 cm. One hundred million years ago, a group broke with the classic ammonite coiling pattern (according to a spiral with joined turns) to elaborate an infinite number of other types of shells. The whole of these specimens, described under the term of uncoiled ammonites corresponds undoubtedly to the most characteristic fossils of Provence because one finds there 80% of the world species. If these ammonites are certainly among the rarest, their aerial port and their slender appearance also give them an extraordinary aesthetic component resulting in real natural sculptures. The spines of these ammonites must have played a direct role in their protection against the large marine predators of the time. SALE BY APPOINTMENT
