Oudenaarde tapestry; Flanders. Early 17th... - Lot 14 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Oudenaarde tapestry; Flanders. Early 17th century. Technical characteristics : Wool and silk. Restorations. Some oxidation and natural wear. Dimensions : Height : 255cm ; Width : 170cm. This tapestry tells us a mythological scene that takes place in Arcadia (Peloponnese region), a country that was celebrated, by the arts, as the symbol of a preserved, wild and harmonious nature. In the flowery undergrowth of a deep forest, Alpheus, the river god, dressed in blue and lying on a rock, assisted by a noble lady, reveals to three Arcadian shepherds with their staffs, the presence of the nymph Arethusa, changed into a spring, under the flat stone, by the goddess Artemis who wanted to protect her, Alpheus having no end of desire to merge his waters with her. This happens under the impassive eye of many sheep grazing. Border with braids of flowering laurels.
