FLANDERS. Late panel of tapestry from Flanders (Oudenaarde). Late 16th century. Probably a wood panel, Henri IV period. Hunting scenes in the castle of Nerac : Henri IV and Queen Margot. Henri IV and Queen Margot in the foreground surrounded by musicians, hunters in the heart of a rich vegetation and in the background on the left the castle of Nerac. In silk and wool Some restorations of maintenance Remarkable finesse and freshness of color Height 155cm - Width 270cm Marguerite de Valois (1553-1615), known as Queen Margot, was the daughter of King Henri II and Catherine de Medici. Henri de Navarre married her in 1572 a few days before the Saint Bartholomew's Day. She remained at the Court after her husband's flight and joined him in Nerac in 1579. She fell out with him and returned to the Court but was expelled by Henri III in 1583 after plotting with the Duke of Alençon. Her husband welcomed her to Nérac but had her locked up in the Château d'Usson from 1587 to 1605. She agreed to the annulment of her marriage in 1599 after the death of Gabrielle d'Estrées.
