AUBUSSON Important tapestry from the Royal... - Lot 40 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
AUBUSSON Important tapestry from the Royal Manufacturers of Aubusson. Beginning of the 18th century, from a cardboard box by Isaac CATHONNET. Duck hunting Silk and wool. Remarkable state of preservation. Beautiful freshness of the colours. Some maintenance restorations. To note the colours of Red: very sought-after. Ht. 290cm - Width 475cm The theme of greens has been interpreted very often in all the French workshops. Indeed, this type of tapestry panel was preferably unfurled in winter and most often reproduced views of the gardens, in summer, of the houses in which they were exhibited. In general, there were at least four of these panels in order to have views of all parts of the property they were displayed in. Here, our panel shows a castle with a view of its garden in which a woman is walking, in the foreground a dog chasing a couple of green-collar ducks, to the right of a spring fountain with a parrot at the top, an exotic bird of fantasy par excellence, while on the left a large thistle symbolizes the sun and the hope of better days. A rich and beautiful border attests by the presence on its "listel" of the abbreviation "I-C-M-RDAUBSSON" for Isaac Cathonnet Manufacture Royale D'AUBUSSON. A tapestry with an identical cardboard is reproduced on page 214 of the book "les belles heures de la tapisserie" by Dario Boccara (ed. 1971).
