Hanging on the Royal Hunts ALWELT Hunt Tapestry... - Lot 5 - FEE - Stanislas Machoïr
Hanging on the Royal Hunts ALWELT Hunt Tapestry panel from Oudenaarde, from the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century; belonging to a series of hangings on royal hunts with concomitant registers on hunting, myths and legends. This panel relates the lark hunt. Height : 305 cm ; Width : 285 cm. Here we can see 3 registers: - - - A chapter on lark hunting with mirrors; A mythological chapter in the story of Psyche; A biblical chapter on the myth of King David's friendship with Jonathan his brother of milk, games, hunting and weapons; But also a conjunction of the lark mirror and the meditating sisters of Psyche, on the values and attractions of friendship and brotherhood. Theme on hunting Very often, these tapestries were populated by animals as noble as fantastic and even legendary. Thus showing that the fantastic fauna lived well in all regions, even near the dwellings. These tapestries were suitable for telling hunting stories, tales and legends in the evenings. In times when the real and the fabulous were often confused, certain animals had a special place in the popular imagination. Our ancestors knew them well, for having rubbed shoulders with them in our forests. Wasn't hunting reserved for princes and nobility? Mirrors are in themselves very rare and very expensive objects at that time, which is why lark hunting with the help of small palets made of mirrors must have been an extraordinary spectacle for the time. Here we can observe two characters, one who seems to be holding the shaft of a thin net, and the other, with holds on his shoulder, throwing and manipulating these mirror pucks, some of which are on the ground. Biblical theme Jonathan (in Hebrew: the one God gave) is a biblical character. I
