FLANDRES
Important and fine Tapestry of Flanders (Antwerp). Beginning of the 17th century (the work of the Brussels and Antwerp factories are very close). Taken from the story of the Iliad and the Odyssey (The Trojan War) Ulysses was accompanied by his friend Diomedes. Later, Diomedes assists Ulysses when he enters Troy at night to steal the Palladion, an effigy of Athena, which according to the soothsayer Helenos, is indispensable to the Greeks to bring down the city. Tapestry probably coming from the Wauters manufactory, recognizable and characterized by the relative quality of the author of the cartoons of this workshop, representing Odysseus and Diomedes taking possession of the statuette of Pallas. Wool and silk. Wide borders with three medallions inlaid with landscapes and surrounded by sheaves and wreaths of flowers and foliage decorated with floral cords. Nice freshness of colours. Maintenance restorations Ht. 265cm - Width 380cm Son of Ares and the nymph Cyrene, or of Atlas and Asteria, Diomedes was the king of the Bistones, in Thrace. He owned four mares named Dinos, Lampon, Podargos and Xanthos, who were so ferocious that they were tied with iron chains because he fed them human flesh. Heracles tamed them in his eighth work and made Diomedes devour them by his own escapades. Then he led the cavales to Eurysthaeus, who first consecrated them to Hera, then released them on Mount Olympus, where they were devoured by the fierce beasts. Odysseus is the most famous hero of all antiquity. His legend, which is the subject of the Odyssey, was the subject of revisions, additions and commentaries until the end of antiquity. Even more than that of Achilles, it has lent itself to symbolic and mystical interpretations.
