BRUXELLES
Fine tapestry panel from Brussels (Flanders), middle of the 17th century, probably a panel of woodwork (cut out), taken from ancient history, probably the peace treaty between Hadrian and Khosro I (Hadrian negotiating with Khosro, king of the Parthians a lasting peace and returning his daughter, a prisoner of the Romans in 123 AD, to him). In silk and wool Fairly good general condition Maintenance restorations, beautiful freshness of colours Ht. 240cm - Width 285cm This tapestry relates a historical scene, taking place, most certainly, in Syria in 123 BC, between Hadrian, Emperor of Rome and Khosro I, King of Parthia. The Roman emperor Hadrian in armour, cape on his shoulder, his right hand raised, helped by a dwarf aide-de-camp holding his helmet and accompanied by a counsellor and a legionary armed with a pick and shield, addresses King Parthian, turbaned, richly dressed and seated on a throne of golden scales. He is also surrounded by counsellors and soldiers in the shade of drapes. The landscape is hilly and wooded, and a stream can be seen between the two rulers, probably the Euphrates, chosen as the border between Rome and Parthia. Hadrian chose to renounce the conquests of his predecessor, Trajan, in Armenia, Mesopotamia and Assyria in order to consolidate his borders.
